Tier List Updates

January 2024 Update

Overview

Since our last server tier list update, there have been many major changes to the competitive scene, including two DLC updates to the latest generation. As such, many changes had to be made to update this tier list to more modern standards. In total, there are just shy of 200 Pokémon moved to a different tier, and while we will discuss some of the tier drops, we will be primarily focused on explaining bans.

As we’ve only had a few main tier tournaments (OU, UU, RU etc) to use as material for our analysis, and the replay system for Smogon had been wiped, we had only so much information of our own to use. Therefore, many of our decisions were based around Smogon’s placements, which we used where we could to fill in gaps of information. We each did our own research and then voted on each placement, with a majority deciding the change for each Pokémon listed below.

Noteworthy Change Notes

Ogerpon-Hearthflame - Direct to Ubers

Ogerpon-Hearthflame, or Ogerpon-Fire as it will be called for simplicity's sake, will be automatically placed in the Ubers tier for the time being. While we are aware of the destructive power of its Tera form, we did not allow this to play a factor in our decision.

When comparing Ogerpon-Fire to the 40 Pokémon currently in our OU tier for damage calculations, only 2 of them had consistently positive matchups, with the rest not standing much of a chance. Unlike its other three forms, its coverage is better and has a generally more offensive presence. However, like all placements, we are open to feedback and discussion on this decision.

Dragapult - OU to Ubers

With Kingambit gone from our tiers, it was only a matter of time before Dragapult were brought into question. In even our own tournaments, its performance was exceptionally good, being the most dominant Pokémon in the Halloween Tournament, and in other tournaments doing well above average, due to its plethora of options to run, most if not all leading to sweeps. For the betterment of the tier, we have moved this Pokémon to Ubers.

Mega Alakazam - OU to Ubers

Mega Alakazam was a suspect test candidate last time the tiers were updated, and while it did not get as much usage as we’d have liked to collect data, what information we did gather suggested it had too much sweep potential for the OU tier, especially without the presence of Kingambit. With access to Nasty Plot and incredibly high base Speed, this allows M-Alakazam to go on late game sweeps often uncontested, and has shown too much potential for a healthy OU tournament scene.

Regieleki - OU to Ubers

Often the most controversial Pokémon we discuss in changelogs, Regieleki was voted to be moved to the Uber tier once more. Given its strong performances in our tournaments and Smogon's placement in Ubers for both Gen 9 and Nat Dex, we decided to place it back in Ubers.

However, we are aware of feedback given in #competitive-battling surrounding this Pokémon, so while we’re sticking with this decision for now, we will be re-reviewing it with the next tier list update alongside the Indigo Disk Pokémon when they’re added in the near future.

Sneasler - OU to Ubers

Sneasler was another suspect tested Pokémon from the last major update, and we were initially incredibly on the fence about its placement, especially after feedback regarding its Dire Claw feeling very uncompetitive to play against. However, we did decide that given at the time a suspect test by Smogon was planned to be happening soon that it would play an additional factor in our decision. We did so, and Smogon chose to ban it, and after reading their analysis, we felt we agreed with the decision.

Sneasler has many factors which make it a very scary presence; its high damage ceiling with Swords Dance access, and its Unburden ability being incredibly easy to activate (even more so in Pixelmon where it can activate it automatically with a Flying Gem), and make it an incredibly potent threat. In our own tournaments, it has pulled off multiple reverse sweeps as after Unburden it is almost impossible to outspeed it without a priority move. While Smogon noted its Tera types in their decision, we felt its general performance without Tera proved to be enough on its own to warrant a ban.

Cinderace - OU to UU

Cinderace was a suspect test candidate from the last update. While in earlier generations, Cinderace posed enough of a threat that it caused many a lengthy discussion regarding whether or not to ban it, the current iteration of Cinderace as we see it now does not need the same treatment, as it seems to, ironically, underperform.

We compared its performance to Meowscarada, its Gen 9 counterpart with the same ability with a different name, which was used far more, and has been placed in the UU tier. While Protean and Libero work as they did in Gen 8 in Pixelmon, we did not feel they placed enough of a role currently, especially as most tournaments are held currently on Showdown, where this would be a non-factor. In future we may re-evaluate this decision if there are any concerns, however we feel confident that an Uber placement at the very least was not on the cards this time around.

Ting-Lu - UU TO OU

A Pokémon overlooked in previous updates as it was still fairly new, Ting-Lu has proven to be a defensive monster more than deserving of a place in OU. Its monolithic defences, due in no small part to its ability, paired with hazard setup and Whirlwind make it incredibly hard to take on one-on-one, and plays a very similar role as Skarmory once did in OU in previous generations. Its tournament performance has also been incredible, and as such we feel there would be little opposition to placing it in the OU tier overall.

Moltres - UU to UUBL

Moltres, at one point, was considered a poor choice in our tiers, before the introduction of Heavy Duty Boots. Since then however, it has performed better and better.

At the time of our initial discussion, Moltres was placed in the OU tier by Gen 9 Nat Dex. We decided to place it in UUBL as we weren’t certain on its placement in OU being warranted, despite analysis for OU sets being present on Smogon, so we settled on UUBL. However it has since dropped to UU, and as such we may review this Pokémon once more if suggested to us before the next update.

Mega Slowbro - RU to UU (By Technicality)

Humorously, we realized Mega-Slowbro was initially placed below Slowbro on the tier list, given Slowbro is often considered more useful with its Regenerator ability, and it doesnt use up a Mega slot. However, similar to Garchomp and Tyranitar, you need to start in the base form to become the Mega form, so it has been moved to UU by technicality.

Cresselia - RU to UU

With the rise of Trick Rooms since the last tier update, Cresselia has been seeing a lot more usage in Showdown, to a point it has reached UU this time around. We feel this is the correct placement for this bulky and potent Trick Room setter, as it also sees a lot of usage as a Healing Wish user to bring an offensive powerhouse back to form.

Galarian Weezing - RU to UU

In a similar vein to Cresselia, Galarian Weezing has also seen a surge of usage on Smogon as its bulk has been especially notable, and access to Defog makes it a decent pick for many UU teams, giving it a niche over Galarian Slowbro and Amoonguss, two more commonly chosen UU Poison types, as neither can clear hazards.

Mega Banette - RU to UU

Anyone who has been watching our previous OU and Masters Tournaments may have seen this one coming. M-Banette has seen a surge in usage on Showdown, and even on our server, as a Destiny Bond counter to many powerful sweepers, and understandably so, as it began to rise around the time of Kingambit, Dragapult and Gholdengo, and has stuck around ever since. While on paper it may seem a bit niche, in practice it serves as a great shutdown tactic against sweepers, and should not be overlooked.

Ribombee - NU to OU

Easily the biggest jump in placement, and it’s easy to see why. Initially, Ribombee was seen as a low tier threat that served one purpose; Sticky Webs. This is still it’s primary usage, but has begun appearing on OU tier teams as often as Pelipper, a fellow supportive Pokémon that focuses on setting up Rain for it’s team instead.  It’s also important to note the Pokémon has begun seeing usage in Ubers for similar reasons, as the combination of its ability and a focus sash make it’s setup as a lead Pokémon very hard to stop. It's also seen its fair share of usage like this on our own server, and as such, we felt this move to OU was very much justified.

Upcoming Suspect Tests

Gliscor - OU to Ubers

Gliscor has become incredibly prominent in OU, as it gets access to three different entry hazards, as well as having all the bells and whistles that make it so strong in earlier generations. It’s incredibly bulky, and can be run multiple ways, Swords Dance + Facade, defensive stall with Roost and Toxic, and many more combinations involving Earthquake, Protect, Substitute, Knock Off and any combination of the already mentioned entry hazards.

It actually managed to get a ban in Gen 9 OU, but got unbanned for Indigo Disk, so it’s riding the line there. Given it hasn't shown to be as oppressive in our own tournaments, we’re looking for feedback and data in future tournaments to help us make this decision for our own server going forward.

Gholdengo - OU to Ubers

Gholdengo is another controversial Pokémon and has warranted suspect tests and several discussions around bans in Smogon’s forums since the Kingambit ban. It is effectively what many see as the perfect hazard stopper; Good as Gold preventing Defog, Toxic Spikes having no effect upon it’s switch in due to being Steel type, Rapid Spin not working either as it’s a Ghost type, and you can’t even status it thanks to Good as Gold either.

On top of all that, it’s got a very offensive presence with Nasty Plot and a good base Special Attack, and access to good coverage options like Thunderbolt, Psyshock, Focus Blast and Dazzling Gleam. Choice Scarf variants also exist with Trick and can often lead to unfun situations for players. Lastly, it’s worth mentioning it has the stats to try to play defensively too, with reliable recovery in Recover, and Air Balloon serving as a solid anti-Ground type strategy while it takes a turn to set up.

We feel we want to hear player feedback, as well as see more, before making a final decision regarding this Pokémon.

July 2023 Update

Hisuians (OU ->> UUBL)

These Hiusian Pokémon will be dropping to the UUBL Tier. They began in the OU Tier when Pokémon Home allowed Legends Arceus transfers, and across all Smogon tiers, these Pokémon have dropped to different tiers since. We hope to reflect this change in our own tiers, and as such have chosen to move them all together, and may make changes in future based on the meta.

Paradox (OU ->> UU)

These Future Paradox Pokémon have been slightly tweaked in their placements. They are a tier above their Smogon placements as we want to give them some time to be tested in our own meta and see what specific bans are necessary based on the upcoming OU and UU Tournaments.

Noteworthy Changes

Inteleon (OU ->> RU)

Due to Pokémon Home, Intelleon was initially placed high in OU for Gen 9. However, as time has passed, this Pokémon has dropped drastically down the tiers due to its usage not meeting the lofty expectations of OU. RU felt like a far more appropriate fit.

Deoxys-Defence (Uber -> UUBL)

Deoxys has always been a ban worthy Pokémon since its inception in Generation 3, however of all its forms, Deoxys Defence tends to be considered the weakest due to its statline, lack of defensive ability, shallow movepool, and has generally been outclassed as the years have passed it by.. This Pokémon will be placed in UUBL, while we analyse it further through its potential usage in the tier.

Sneasler (Uber ->> OU)

We are still monitoring this Pokemon.

Sneasler was a Pokémon the competitive committee decided to unanimously ban. There were many good reasons for this, most notably its high damage thresholds, ability to outspeed literally any Pokémon in the game with Unburden, and of course, the infamous Dire Claw.

Since our last tier rework, there were a few question marks surrounding our decision, and after a close vote, we have decided to give it another look, giving it a proper chance to be suspect tested to see if the ban was the correct decision as we’re currently doing 3 other tests. This one more than any other will be monitored extremely closely, as it's a very controversial Pokémon as we’re aware, but we hope the reasoning behind this suspect test is understood.

Mega-Alakazam (OU ->> Uber)

We are still monitoring this Pokemon.

We’ve heard the comments in #competitive-battling regarding this Pokémon, and we want to make it known; we hear you. Mega Alakazam gained Nasty Plot in Gen 8, and similar to Mega Blastoise, this sent this Pokémon rocketing up the tier placements on Smogon.

We would like to review this Pokémon in our own meta, as currently the tier is centralised around Kingambit, and other such counters. After seeing how it performs in the next OU Tournament, we will  determine what we do next.

Kyurem (Uber ->> OU)

We are still monitoring this Pokemon.

Kyurem was an interesting Pokémon for our server in 1.12. In a very short timeframe, it proved itself as a potent enough threat that as the server was getting close to the 1.16 announcement, it was moved to Uber due to high tournament placements and dominance in the meta, similar to threats like Cinderace and Magearna.

However, since then, it has mellowed out in the Smogon meta, not posing nearly as much of a threat as new Pokémon joined the fray, and others shifted around. However, due to concerns with dropping it directly into OU, we will be suspect testing this Pokémon.

Cinderace (Uber ->> OU)

We are still monitoring this Pokemon.

The most controversial Pokémon from 1.12, Cinderace, is back again for another discussion. Last time it was discussed, it took several weeks to finally land on the decision to ban the Pokémon due to its ability and pure raw power in the metagame at the time.

However, as new Pokémon were added, Cinderace has gone from a hyper offensive role to a semi supportive one, similar to Greninja after its debut generation. Speaking of, Libero and Protean have not been updated to their Gen 9 counterparts yet, meaning they still change their type for every move used, not just the first. If this were not the case, Cinderace would be a more clear drop to OU as it plays similarly to Meowscarada in many ways, however we want to ensure we aren't making a mistake in this, so a suspect test is going to be done.

Little Cup

Basculin-H (ban)

This is a pokemon who received an evolution in later games. As such, it follows suit with other mons who did the same and gets placed in NFE. This is mostly due to a much higher base stat total than any other Pokemon that you will find in LC.

In Basculins case, it's 460. On top of that, Basculin gets adaptability, which grants it a 2x multiplier on STAB moves instead of the regular 1.5x multiplier. Boasting a whopping 92 attack stat and 98 speed, if left in the list, it would not only have the 8th highest attack, but the 3rd highest speed. There is no wall that wave crash + adaptability wont break, and with aqua jet, there is little that can outspeed tier this thing.

Corsola-G (ban)

The Galar variant of Corsola has an evolution unlike its Johto counterpart, yet it has the same base stat total... 410. 260 of those are where they matter, being HP, Defence, and Special Defence. It has access to Strength Sap to stay healthy, Haze to prevent setup, and other notable moves such as Stealth Rocks and Whirlpool.

If left in the tier, it would have the 6th highest defence and 2nd highest special defence. Pair this with Eviolite and you have a nearly unkillable mon, as it can spam Strength Sap and render any physical attacker useless. Special mons are the way to kill Corsola, and even then, they can struggle to do so.

Sneasel-H (ban)

Sneasel-H is a case of too many stats, and those stats are heavily placed where they matter. With a base stat total of 430, it would already top the charts, but thats only the tip of the iceburg.

It has an attack stat of 95 and speed stat of 115. If left in the tier it would be tied at 6th highest attack and ahem 1st place in speed. With the moveset Swords Dance/Night Slash/Poison Jab/Close Combat it can hit every pokemon in the tier atleast for neutral damage except itself and Croagunk, meaning that if it ever gets a chance to come in for free and SD, the game is very close to being over then and there.

Its typing also means that it resists most common priority moves being Sucker Punch, Mach Punch, Grassy Glide, and First Impression. The best you can do is Neutral damage Priority moves meaning Sneasel-H will almost always either go first, or live the initial hit and kill the attacker.

Stantler (ban)

This is a pokemon who recieved an evolution in later games. As such, it follows suit with other mons who did the same and gets placed in NFE. This is mostly due to a much higher base stat total than any other pokemon that you will find in LC.

In Stantlers case, its 465. Stantler has high attack at 95, which if left in the tier would tie it at 6th highest, and above average defensive stats for how hard it hits. It can easily come in on physical attackers with Intimidate and Strength sap, and being able to hit every mon in tier for atleast neutral damage with Double Edge/Sucker Punch/Earthquake.

Qwilfish-H (ban)

The Hisui variant of Qwilfish has an evolution unlike its Johto counterpart, yet it has the same base stat total... 440.

Qwilfish-H has a high attack stat at 95, which if left in the tier would tie it at 6th highest, and an above average spread for the rest of its stats allowing it to still outspeed most mons and take a hit before feinting. It gets access to Swords Dance for setup, and Aqua Jet or Liquidation (priority or damage)/Crunch/Poison Jab allows it to hit the entire tier atlest neutral, and it also gets Self-Destruct if you want to go that route.
